THE ART OF MAKING FRIENDS

More than training.

BJJ combines physical movement with a mental challenge. You learn to stay calm under pressure, understand situations and find solutions. Experiences that stay with you in everyday life. Along the way, something grows beyond technique: trust in the people you train with. You learn from each other, challenge each other and laugh together. Age, background and different paths through life become less important. What matters is your time together on the mat. That is how BJJ becomes part of your life. You come to train and look forward to seeing people. Everyday worries can wait. You leave with a clearer head – and a sense of belonging.

Understand.

We show the technique of the day from different angles and explain the details behind it. You can ask questions, then try the movement with your partner. Our coaches move around the group, watch your execution and give you individual guidance. You learn not just how a technique works, but why and when it makes sense. Step by step, you see connections and find your own solutions.

Two training partners in white Gis discuss a technique.

Grow.

Rolling turns knowledge into skill. Your partner responds actively, defends and pursues their own ideas. You test what you have learned in motion, developing timing and a feel for momentum: when does an opportunity arise? When should you yield, and when should you act? You agree on the intensity together. Our coaches know your experience and physical abilities and choose suitable pairings. You should feel challenged without being overwhelmed. A tap or a stop ends the action immediately. Your training partners are improving alongside you. That makes it easy to overlook your own progress. Over time, you recognise more possibilities and develop your own Game.

A BJJ practitioner receives a blue belt surrounded by the training community.

Come back.

You come to train and look forward to the people. You challenge each other, help each other improve and laugh together. Practising together builds trust. After every class, the mat stays open for another 15 minutes: for an extra round, a question or a conversation. Time to learn from each other and get to know one another better. You leave with a clearer head and look forward to next time. Training becomes part of everyday life.

YOUR WAY TO VIBES

Where does your journey begin?

Perhaps this is your first time on a mat. Perhaps you are looking for new training partners. Wherever you are starting from, you will feel welcome here.

BJJ FOR BEGINNERS

01

Just get started.

Haven’t exercised in a while, or never tried a martial art? You don’t need any experience to start with us. At VIBES, younger and older people train together. We adapt the intensity and guide you personally. From your first visit, you will experience how much we value training together.

01 / UNDERSTANDING THE IDEA

What exactly is BJJ?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art focused on ground fighting. You learn to gain control through position, movement and technique, escape difficult situations and submit your partner using joint locks or chokeholds. Technical understanding helps you work against physical advantages. What looks unfamiliar at first becomes clearer step by step: where is the weight? What is holding me in place? Which way can I move? You learn to recognise possibilities and act deliberately. Your partner presents challenges and helps you learn to solve them.

Two training partners in black Gis use grips on the uniform.
The Gi offers additional ways to grip and control.

02 / TRAINING IN THE GI

Gi. The foundation.

In Gi training, you wear a BJJ uniform and a belt. You can grip your partner’s uniform and use those grips to control movement. You learn to execute techniques precisely and understand the details behind them. Think of learning to read: we build a vocabulary and learn the grammar. This creates a technical foundation you can draw on in other training situations too.

Direct body control and movement in NoGi training.

03 / TRAINING WITHOUT THE GI

NoGi. In motion.

In NoGi training, you wear a rashguard and sports shorts. There are no clothing grips; you work with direct body control. Positions often change faster and exchanges become more dynamic. In our analogy, NoGi is speed reading: you use what you have learned, spot opportunities and respond immediately. Gi helps you build the foundation. NoGi develops your reactions and fluent application. They belong together.

FIND YOUR FEET AT VIBES

Understand.

We explain techniques in detail. You then practise with a partner while coaches guide you, make corrections and answer your questions. You learn to use movement, position and timing with purpose. Every adult class is suitable for beginners. We explain the basics and choose experienced partners who guide you through practice and rolling. Regular training builds your vocabulary, whichever technique you start with.

Safety.

Our training is based on a clear agreement: I apply a technique until you signal me to stop. As soon as you tap or say “stop”, I release immediately. This allows both partners to work actively: one tries to apply a technique, the other tries to defend it. You don’t have to endure anything or prove yourself. You can stop at any time, even before a technique hurts or you feel overwhelmed. This trust makes intense, controlled practice possible. We match partners and intensity carefully and explore personal limits gradually. The risk of injury cannot be eliminated entirely.

Get to know us.

We want you to get a real feel for us before deciding to train here. Do you enjoy BJJ? Do you feel comfortable? Do the coaches explain things clearly? Can you ask questions? Do you like the people you train with? The best way to find out is to experience it. That is why we give it ten days: you get to know us, and we get to know you. You can attend different sessions, ask questions and find out whether BJJ and VIBES are right for you.

WITH EXPERIENCE

02

Bring your Game. Discover new possibilities.

Have you trained BJJ before or practised another martial art? Tell us what you bring with you. De La Riva’s Jiu-Jitsu is particularly technical: we look for elegant solutions that use as little strength as possible. We observe closely, understand movement and discover opportunities in the details.

Two training partners in blue and white Gis practise a BJJ technique.

Gi and NoGi.

Gi and NoGi complement each other. In the Gi, you work on precision, grips and control. Without it, you apply your understanding to a more dynamic exchange and respond to rapidly changing situations. The underlying principles are the same: position, balance, movement and timing. The better you understand them, the more deliberately you can develop your Game in both styles.

See the connections.

Strength and weight can force some positions. But a solution that depends on being stronger or heavier reaches its limits against partners with those same advantages. That is why we study the connections: how do movement patterns work? How do you create motion and use momentum? How do you shift your partner’s weight, affect their balance and create an opportunity? Often, the first step is to let go. When practising technique, we deliberately reduce strength and pressure so we can see what actually makes a movement work. Strength, weight and athleticism can come back later, supporting a technique you understand.

Visiting or staying.

Just visiting? We offer drop-in passes for one day or one week. Are you regularly in the area for work, but not often enough for a standard membership? Talk to us. We can usually find a suitable arrangement.

BJJ FOR CHILDREN & TEENAGERS

Start with movement. Grow with experience.

Children develop at different rates. We choose a training group based on their motor skills and personal maturity. Age gives us a rough guide. What matters is finding training that suits your child and helps them develop with confidence and enjoyment.

Two training partners in white Gis practise a BJJ technique.
7–10 years

Fundamentals. The basics.

Plenty of movement, playful challenges and those first moments of success: in Fundamentals, children get to know their bodies better. They develop coordination, balance and a feel for practising together. They also learn to listen, follow rules and pay attention in class. With lots of action, we introduce the first BJJ basics and simple elements of techniques. Consideration and a dependable way of treating each other are part of it from day one.

10+ years

Advanced. Learning with purpose.

Children with the necessary maturity can move into the Advanced group. Training becomes more systematic: we explain techniques in greater detail and practise movements more deliberately with a partner. Their first sparring rounds let them try out what they have learned. The intensity stays appropriate for children. They learn to look after each other, respect boundaries and act thoughtfully in challenging situations.

14+ years

The next step. Training with adults.

From age 14, teenagers can join regular adult training if they have the necessary maturity. They take part in the standard class and develop their skills alongside adult training partners. Age alone does not decide when the time is right. We agree on the transition together.

These ages are a rough guide. Actual maturity matters most. Fundamentals and Advanced are the two children’s groups; from 14, teenagers with the appropriate maturity can join regular adult training.

Children and adults in Gis together on the mat in front of the VIBES sign.

Which group is right for my child?

The ages are a guide. Together, we look at how your child moves, how well they can follow the class and how they interact with training partners. This helps us find the right starting point. Moving to the next group depends on your child’s development.

A warm moment between an adult and a child.

What parents want to know before visiting

What kind of environment will my child train in? Who will guide them, who will they practise with and what values will they learn? You may also have personal questions or something you would like us to know about your child. During trial training, we make time to get to know you and answer your questions. Come along, see how we interact and form your own impression. Above all, you and your child can find out whether they feel comfortable here and enjoy the training.

BJJ FOR WOMEN

04

Feel at home.

You want to learn new things, challenge yourself and feel comfortable doing it. That means training partners who take you seriously, respond to your needs and share in your progress. You bring your own goals, set your boundaries and work with us to find the right intensity.

Four women in Gis sit on the mat laughing together.

Respect comes first

Good training needs trust. We agree on intensity together, take boundaries seriously and respect every stop immediately. You can try things out and challenge yourself without having to prove anything. If something makes you uncomfortable, speak up at any time. Our coaches will listen and support you.

Joy and a handshake at a belt promotion.

Your goals are yours

Technique, fitness, competition or simply the joy of movement: whatever your goal, we are by your side. Be ambitious, ask questions and try something new.

Experience community

Belonging shows in the little things: feeling free to ask questions and being asked in return, celebrating a partner’s success and hearing them cheer for yours. These small moments add up. An ordinary training session becomes something special through the people you share the mat with.

UNDERSTANDING BJJ

Connecting the techniques.

The idea behind BJJ

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art focused on ground fighting. On the ground, position and control can restrict an opponent’s movement and limit opportunities to strike or kick. Technique can compensate for physical advantages such as size and strength, although it cannot erase them entirely. You learn to reach an advantageous position, control your partner and apply joint locks or chokeholds deliberately. Movement, balance and the thoughtful use of strength are central to this. In training, you explore your options and learn to respond with judgement. A respectful environment without aggression and dependable partners provide the foundation. You challenge each other, respect boundaries and stop immediately when someone taps or signals a stop. With experience, your perspective changes. Situations that once felt confusing or intimidating become clearer. You spot opportunities and develop solutions, like solving a puzzle together in motion. Uncertainty can gradually become confidence in your ability to act.

Five fundamental principles

01

Leverage over strength.

Use body structure, angles and leverage to create movement and apply techniques. The better your position, the less strength you need.

02

Inside position.

Placing your hands, arms or knees between you and your partner helps you manage distance, create room to move and make attacks harder.

03

Stability and posture.

A solid base and good body alignment give you control. You also learn to affect your partner’s balance and posture.

04

Create space with frames.

Frames are supportive structures formed, for example, with your forearms or shins. They help you handle pressure, maintain distance and create room for your next move.

05

Control the hips and body alignment.

Many movements begin at the hips. Controlling their freedom of movement and the alignment of the upper body makes turns, escapes and the use of strength more difficult.

Gentle mobility exercises increase our range of movement and prepare our bodies for training.

  2. About 10 minutes

    Watch and understand

We demonstrate the technique of the day from different angles and explain the key details. Questions are very welcome.

  3. Practise together

    Try and refine

You practise with your partner. Our coaches move around the group, watch closely and give individual corrections. Then there is a short water break.

  4. About 25 minutes

    Apply and explore

Free rolling puts what you have learned into motion. You agree on intensity together, and the coaches make sure partners are well matched.

We finish by lining up together and saying goodbye. The mat then stays open for 15 minutes of free rolling and conversation. Afterwards, we clean the mat before the next class begins.

BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU LIFESTYLE

A little Rio. In your everyday life.

One more round on the mat. Then the sea, feet in the sand. A cold açaí, conversations with friends, laughing together. This is how we experience BJJ in Rio: training is part of life. And life around it belongs too.

Spending time together in Rio at sunset.
Shared time. Real connections.

Mat. Beach. Açaí.

In Rio, these worlds are close together. On the mat, you challenge yourself. At the beach, you let go, jump in the water or simply stay a little longer with the others. Training time becomes time together. For us, this mix of movement, effort and ease captures the Brazilian BJJ lifestyle.

Your everyday life could use more of this.

After a day full of appointments, reconnect with your body. Focus fully on one thing during training instead of already thinking about the next task. Challenge yourself, try something new and laugh at yourself sometimes. Then sit together, talk and go home with a clearer head. You don’t need a beach on your doorstep. You need time for movement, for yourself and for people you enjoy being with.

What you practise on the mat can stay with you throughout the day: take a breath when things get tight. Try another way when something doesn’t work. Be patient while learning. Ask for help instead of trying to solve everything alone. Training becomes something that enriches everyday life. That is what we mean by Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu lifestyle.

More than technique.

Our BJJ is rooted in Master De La Riva’s school in Rio. His highly technical style shapes how we train and teach: observing closely, understanding details and building techniques deliberately. We keep this connection alive through training together and personal exchange.

Just as important is the community Master has created through his openness and warmth. Many have trained with him for decades. They have spent a large part of their lives together, built friendships and shared far more than techniques.

Prof. Oscar lived in Brazil for many years and is an integral part of this community. He brought its approach to training and to each other to VIBES. Today, we are part of it too – Wolfram for nearly twelve years.

This is what we pass on to everyone who trains here: technical depth in BJJ and a warm sense of togetherness. A place where you enjoy spending time, get to know people and leave feeling that the time has done you good.

TRY 10 DAYS FOR FREE

Your first step starts with hello.

One class is often not enough to get a feel for a school. Get to know VIBES over ten days and find out whether you enjoy training here.

Your free trial covers ten consecutive calendar days from your first training session, not ten separate visits. This offer is for new visitors with no previous membership who have not used it before and who live or work in our area. Visiting practitioners can ask us about the Academy Pass.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions about BJJ and getting started.

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or BJJ, is a martial art focused on ground fighting. You learn positions, control, joint locks and chokeholds. Clear stop signals and respectful interaction are part of training with a partner.

Do you also offer MMA?

We are a dedicated BJJ gym. All our teaching focuses on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: Gi, NoGi and age-appropriate children’s training. If you are looking for pure BJJ, you are in the right place. We do not offer MMA.

What does “Game” mean in BJJ?

Your Game is your personal way of applying BJJ. It develops as you adapt techniques and concepts to your body, your movement and your preferences. It includes your favourite positions, transitions and solutions.

Where can I train BJJ with VIBES?

Our gym is at Zimmersmühlenweg 14–18, 61440 Oberursel. We also welcome people from Frankfurt am Main, Bad Homburg, Steinbach and Eschborn. All training takes place at our Oberursel location.

Can I start without martial arts experience?

Yes. Let us know you are new when you contact us. Our coaches will help you learn the exercises and class routines. You don’t need to know any techniques beforehand.

Is there a separate beginners’ class?

Every class is suitable for beginners. There are no prerequisites, although a good mood always helps. We work systematically through positions and techniques; it does not matter where you start. Come regularly and your vocabulary will build naturally. In class, we pay close attention to who is best suited to practise or roll together.

What do I need for my first BJJ class?

Clean sportswear without zips or hard parts is enough for your first visit. We train barefoot on the mat and have loan Gis for your first sessions. Please don’t buy training clothes beforehand. Our team clothing is available directly from us, with special prices for new members. We currently do not charge a joining fee.

What is the difference between Gi and NoGi?

In Gi training, you wear a BJJ uniform with a belt, and grips on the uniform are part of the practice. NoGi is trained without that uniform, usually in a rashguard and sports shorts. We offer both Gi and NoGi training and strongly recommend practising both. Gi builds your vocabulary; NoGi helps you speak faster.

Do I join sparring from the start?

Yes, free rolling is part of training from the beginning. We introduce you gently: if you are completely new, you train with a very experienced partner who guides you and adjusts the intensity to suit you. Step by step, you settle in and get room to try things for yourself. As your confidence grows, the principle stays the same: your pace and partners who suit you. A tap or “stop” ends the action immediately.

How often should I train as a beginner?

Find a routine that fits your life for the long term. Regular attendance helps you recognise movements and build your technical vocabulary. We take your experience, recovery and availability into account when discussing how often to train. Ask the coaches if you are unsure. Not every session needs to be at the same intensity.

How quickly will I improve?

Sometimes it feels as if you are standing still. Your partners still make things difficult, but they are improving just as you are. Later, when you train with people who are only just starting, your own progress often becomes much clearer. If you are completely new, give yourself around six months before setting high expectations. You need time to get used to movement patterns, find your intensity in rolling and build a small repertoire of techniques. Everyone learns at their own pace. As with learning a language, you begin with a small vocabulary. At some point, you realise you can already say something with it.

How do you approach safety and boundaries?

We emphasise controlled practice, suitable training partners and clear agreements. Share concerns or boundaries early. Even with careful training, the risk of injury cannot be eliminated entirely.

Can women train BJJ at VIBES?

Yes. Women train with all kinds of goals, from getting started to competing. Discuss preferences for partners and intensity with the team.

Can I start BJJ after 40?

You can start or return to BJJ after 40. What matters is your individual situation and a suitable introduction to training. Talk to us about your experience, goals and limits. We choose an appropriate intensity and partners who work well with you. Stay curious. Train safely.

At what age can children join?

Fundamentals is typically for ages 7–10. Advanced is available from around 10 with the appropriate maturity. From 14, teenagers with the necessary maturity can join regular adult training. Age is a rough guide; motor skills and personal maturity matter more. We will discuss the right starting point together.

Can I join with experience or as a visitor?

Adult classes are open to all belt levels. The Academy Pass is available for visiting practitioners. Contact us before your visit and tell us briefly where you are coming from and about your experience.

Do you help with BJJ competition preparation?

Our coaching team brings competition experience and support with preparation. We discuss your Game, potential technical priorities and the rules for your next event. We agree personally with you on the preparation and support we can provide.

How does the ten-day trial work?

Your free trial covers ten consecutive calendar days from your first training session, not ten separate visits. New visitors can get to know VIBES free for ten days. The offer applies to people with no previous membership who have not used it before, live or work in our area and are considering regular training. Arrange your first visit through the contact page.

Is there a DLR Open Mat?

Yes, we occasionally host a DLR Open Mat. There is currently no fixed schedule. Ask us about the next date and participation details.
